Root Canal Therapy

Tooth decay, also known as cavities, are found in many patients. Cavities can be easily fixed many times with a tooth filling. However, sometimes the decay will spread further and need advanced treatment past a tooth filling. If a tooth is decayed beyond repair, a tooth extraction becomes necessary. However, when a tooth is infected but can be saved from extraction, oftentimes a root canal is necessary. Root canal therapy is performed when the infection in a tooth spreads to the pulp of the tooth. When the pulp is infected, it must be removed in order to save the tooth from extraction.

Before performing a root canal, your dentist will ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed. Sedation dentistry may be used to help you feel completely at ease. Your dentist will carefully and thoroughly remove the pulp of the tooth. Once the root canal area is completely clear and the pulp is removed, your dentist will finish treatment.

Root canal therapy saves many teeth each year! Sometimes root canal therapy may sound intimidating to patients, but saving a tooth is a much better alternative than having a tooth extraction and then needing an implant or other tooth replacement.
